CMT Rising Stars opens our 50th season with a special adaptation of a Broadway classic: Fiddler on the Roof Jr.
Set in a small Russian village in 1905, this Tony Award-winning musical tells the story of Tevye, a poor milkman who wants to protect his family’s way of life – but things are changing fast in the world around him. With the help of their eccentric and close-knit Jewish community, he tries to teach his strong-willed daughters the importance of religious and cultural traditions.
Rich in historical and ethnic detail, filled with humor and honesty, this show’s universal themes will resonate with all audiences, regardless of race, class, ethnicity or faith.
Iconic songs: “Sunrise, Sunset,” “If I Were a Rich Man,” “Matchmaker, Matchmaker”
Jennifer Copaken is thrilled to be returning to CMTSJ in the role of choreographer. Prior to choreographing Schoolhouse Rock Live! for CMTSJ in 2008, Jennifer worked in NYC, including these favorites: 2002 Broadway revival of Into the Woods (Assistant Choreographer), The Lion King (Assistant to Resident Director, NYC), City Center Encores! The Pajama Game (Assistant Choreographer). Off-Broadway choreography: Euripidames (HERE) and Coyote Take Me There (La Mama). When her family relocated to Los Angeles, she choreographed for L.A.’s Knightsbridge Theater: Chess, Little Night Music and Comedy of Errors. Concert choreography highlights: Universal Amphitheater’s Hallelu Music Festival and Crossing Traffic, a duet for dancers at Shanghai Ballet. When her family moved north to San Jose (with a toddler and newborn), Jennifer choreographed CMTSJ’s Schoolhouse Rock Live! and fell in love with the CMTSJ community in the role of ͞parent. She continued choregraphing/directing/teaching intermittently at Fisher Middle School and the APJCC. As a dancer, Jennifer performed with KIYA Dance Theatre and Stone Dance Collective in London. She toured with Parparim Dance Ensemble, a NYC based Israeli folk dance company. Jennifer has taught at the Guangdong Modern Dance Company in China, NYC public schools and CityStep, a program at Harvard that brings dance/theater training to 5th graders in Cambridge public schools. She holds a B.A. (History and Literature) from Harvard and an M.A. (Dance) from the Laban Centre in London. Jennifer is ecstatic to be part of CMTSJ’s 50th Season and can’t wait to get started on Fiddler, a piece that is very close to her heart.
