Musical Theater Dance Classes

This popular series focuses on musical theater style dance with emphasis on technique and audition skills. This year, we are introducing a NEW extended format designed to further build upon foundational skills. Members from CMT artistic staff will make guest appearances to teach and share details about our upcoming 50th season productions.

Who Can Attend?

  • Rising Stars Beg/Int (Ages 9 – 14*)
  • Rising Stars Int/Adv (Ages 10 – 14*)
  • Mainstage (Ages 14 – 20)

*Intermediate/Advanced experience prerequisite is 3 YEARS for Rising Stars and 5 YEARS for Mainstage

What time?

  • Rising Stars
    4:00-5:30pm (Beg/Int)
    4:45-6:15pm (Int/Adv)
    Int/Adv Rising Stars students have an option to add Thursdays from 4-5pm to continue their training. Thursday add-ons will include tap dance.
  • Mainstage
    5:30-7pm (Beg/Int)
    6:15pm-7:45pm (Int/Adv)

Mainstage Int/Adv Drop-In Option

Mainstage students have the option to drop into the Int/Adv class on a 2-class session basis for $40 per class. Class themes are as follows:
Sept 11 & 18 / The Who’s Tommy
Sept 25 & Oct 2 / Guys & Dolls
Oct 9 & 16 / West Side Story
Oct 23 & 30 / Newsies

Cost

  • Fall Session: $200
  • The Monday with Thursday add-on: $320

What To Bring

Students are asked to wear closed-toed shoes or jazz-style dance shoes, as well as comfortable clothing that they can easily move around in. Water bottles are encouraged.


Tap Dance Classes

Tap is back! This fall, we’re pleased to offer classes for both Rising Stars and Mainstage levels.

Who Can Attend?

  • Mainstage (Ages 14* – 20) 4:30 – 5:30pm
  • Rising Stars (Ages 10 – 14*) 5:30 – 6:30pm

Cost

  • The 8-week session is $160

What To Bring

Students are asked to wear tap dance shoes as well as comfortable clothing that they can easily move around in. Water bottles are encouraged.


Broadway Workshop

Stay tuned for more details on CMT’s 2018 set of Broadway Workshops. These 2-hour workshops take place on Mondays in January and February. Come learn vocals and choreography from some of Broadway’s biggest hits! Join us for one or all (depending on your age) and work with different teacher artists. Dates and registration will be available soon.

Cancellation Policy

Registration deadlines are set for 5 p.m., one week prior to each class start date.

Cancellations requested prior to the registration deadlines are subject to a $25 processing fee. No refunds for cancellations or transfers will be honored after the registration deadlines. Check payments written with insufficient funds will be subject to a $35 fee.

To request a cancellation or transfer, contact registration@cmtsj.org. Please include: your reason for cancelling/transferring; the registrant’s name; the participant’s name; the title of the class or event; the date and time of the class or event; the age group and/or session number.

About the Instructors

Shannon Self CMT San JoseShannon Self—CMT alumna and full-time Artistic Manager—has taught musical theater, dance and acrobatics at CMT San Jose for over ten years. She also directs, choreographs and occasionally performs for CMT. In addition to the artistic side—Shannon oversees all ten of CMT’s production workshops every year. Outside of CMT Shannon has performed with companies like AMTSJ, Theatrical Arts Int. in Los Angeles and Lenape Regional Theater in Philadelphia. During her early residency here Shannon was fortunate enough to head to Los Angeles to perform in and assist Artistic Director, Kevin R. Hauge, with Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.

CMT directing/choreography credits include: Crazy For You, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Aladdin, The King & I, Wizard of Oz, Jesus Christ Superstar, Miss Saigon, The Boyfriend, Barnum, A Christmas Carol, Tom Sawyer, Bye Bye Birdie, Oliver, The Wiz, Guys and Dolls, Cinderella, Wind in the Willows, Fiddler on the Roof and Heidi.

Regional Choreography credits include: Ragtime in Concert (San Francisco), The Bracebridge Dinners (The Ahwahnee Hotel, Yosemite), Crazy for You (Archbishop Mitty High School), Grease (Gunn High School) and Brigadoon (King’s Academy). She also continues her collaborative work on Trilogy (Three Women Dancing), a new dance musical. Shannon has a bachelor’s degree in theater and dance from Santa Clara University.
