Impact Report 2025

Celebrating Community Impact. Building the Future.

Season 57 |  September 1, 2024 – August 31, 2025

Mission Statement

CMT San Jose trains and educates today’s youth through musical theater to set and achieve high artistic and personal goals, and to inspire them to become exemplary artists, patrons and citizens of tomorrow.

Reflections on Season 57

At the heart of CMT is our unwavering focus on “the kids.” Our mission is centered on guiding young people through their unique artistic journeys, and every decision we make is driven by our commitment to them. Our 57th season was thoughtfully curated to offer fresh, exciting opportunities for actors of all ages. This season features 3 brand new productions, directly from the Broadway stage: Waitress, Hadestown (Teen Edition), and the complete version of Disney’s Frozen. These productions, along with a nearly sold out run of Disney’s Lion King Jr., expanded our reach throughout the Bay Area, welcoming over 2000 new theater patrons and members of the CMT Community.
CMT’s care in assembling top-tier artistic teams is paramount. They not only challenge performers in the rehearsal studios but also support them as they grow, as both compelling artists and compassionate individuals in the world. Our education programs reflect this same dedication, offering a range of classes at all levels to help participants continuously expand their skills and confidence.
Through this work, CMT brings some of the most beautiful and inspiring performances to the San Jose community. The magic created on stage is a testament to their dedication and talent, enriching the cultural fabric of our city.
CMT’s staff and leadership team are incredibly grateful to our subscribers, volunteers, patrons, and everyone who contributes to the success of our organization. But most importantly, we thank “the kids” for calling CMT their home, creating inspiring  moments that will last a lifetime.
Thank you for believing in CMT and helping our community thrive.

Leadership Transition

Celebrating 30 Years of Kevin R. Hauge’s Vision and Leadership

CMT’s New Artistic Director Kikau Alvaro

Season 57 marked both Kevin Hauge’s 30th anniversary and his final year as CMT’s Artistic Director. Over three decades, Kevin transformed CMT from a local children’s theater into one of the nation’s most respected theater companies dedicated to youth. His unparalleled vision of inclusion and artistic excellence has impacted thousands of young people during his tenure and for generations to come.

In the fall of 2024, CMT launched a national search for its next Artistic Director. We are beyond thrilled to welcome Kikau Alvaro to this role beginning with the 2025/2026 season. A CMT alum and a highly respected arts educator, director, choreographer, and leader, Kikau brings both deep roots in the organization and a bold vision for its future. CMT leadership and the community are excited to embrace his leadership at this pivotal moment in our history.

Before his retirement, Kevin was honored with a series of celebrations, including the naming of the Kevin R. Hauge Courtyard at the Montgomery Theater. By dedicating this space in his name, CMT and the City of San Jose honor Kevin’s legacy of artistic excellence—one that transcends the stage, transforms a theater into a thriving community, and leaves an extraordinary and enduring impact.

Spotlight: Artistic Programming

In Season 57, CMT produced 11 productions across our Junior Talents, Rising Stars, Mainstage, and Marquee programs — bringing nearly 25,000 audience members together to experience the magic of live theatre.

The season spanned from youth-driven shows like The Lion King Jr. and James and the Giant Peach to bold, contemporary productions like Hadestown and the complete Broadway version of Disney’s Frozen. Audiences were dazzled by marquee titles Beautiful and Waitress, and young performers gained transformative experiences on stage.

“Thanks to CMT, my child has found a place they feel comfortable, an activity they love, and a community that embraces them for who they are. I can’t tell you how grateful I am, for this organization – not just as someone who appreciates the arts, but as a mother who is watching her child grow in confidence, courage, and self-respect.”

“To do what CMT does — everybody gets a part — you think about how incredibly complicated that process is, and still to come up with a quality product the way they do is amazing.”

-John & Melinda Skeath, Alumni Parents & Long-time Patrons

Spotlight: The Dr. Walt Newman Scholarship Fund

This year, CMT proudly renamed our scholarship fund in honor of longtime supporter, patron, and board member emeritus Dr. Walt Newman. Through this fund, financial barriers will never stand in the way of a child’s chance to shine.

In FY25, scholarships supported students across our education programs, ensuring access to creativity, friendship, and growth on stage.

“Because of CMT’s scholarship program, my child was able to be part of a CMT show for the very first time. I saw them light up on stage, grow more confident, and find a supportive community of friends. This opportunity has truly made a lasting impact on our whole family.”

Spotlight: Donor and Community Support

Our community demonstrated extraordinary generosity in 2025, investing in CMT’s mission and future.

With nearly 1,000 guests and over $524,000 raised, Gala 2025 was the most successful fundraising event in CMT history.

We launched the Kevin Hauge Endowment, a $1 million campaign to secure CMT’s long-term future, with early momentum already building.

Corporate partners expanded their support, strengthening CMT’s role as a cultural anchor in San Jose.

Together, these achievements reflect not only generosity but also a shared belief in the transformative power of youth theater.

Looking Ahead: Season 58

With the arrival of Kikau Alvaro as Artistic Director, CMT is entering a new era of creativity and inclusion. Season 58 is already off to an exciting start with Kikau’s directorial debut in this leadership role with Finding Neverland (Fall 2025). Looking further ahead, our spring Marquee production of Dear Evan Hansen (Spring 2026) will mark a historic milestone, as CMT becomes one of the first nonprofessional theatre companies in the nation to produce this groundbreaking musical.

These productions — and many more to come — reflect the excellence, inclusion, and imagination that define CMT. Together with our community, we will continue to provide life-changing opportunities for young performers and unforgettable theatre for Bay Area audiences.

Alumni Excellence

CMT takes immense pride in the achievements of its alumni. From education, science, and engineering to law and beyond, their success stories continue to inspire. Many also shine brightly on stage and screen—here are just a few of the remarkable alumni carrying the CMT legacy forward.
